Biocompatibility Dental Lab
In-House Dental Laboratory
Several years ago, our dental office in Tijuana opened up its own dental laboratory. The purpose of this move was two-fold:
Quality control – having our laboratory on site in Tijuana, Mexico provides better control and communications between our Tijuana dentists, our patients and our lab technicians for each and every case that is fabricated. Modifications in colors and shades, contours and shapes of our crowns and bridgework can be easily corrected, when needed, while our patients are still in the dental chair. Our laboratory takes pride in providing a quality product for all our patients.
Selecting our own laboratory materials – I’ve seen over the last 10 years just how important it is to use compatible, dental materials in our patient’s mouths. Although this may not be a major concern for most dentists and dental laboratories in this country at this time; as a biological dentist at Tijuana, We are absolutely convinced that choices in materials, especially the metal alloys, is crucial to our patient’s long term health and wellness.
When referencing dental toxicity, this term indicates that a person’s immune system has reacted and “rejected” the specific meterials used during a restoration placed in their mouth. As an educated patient, it should be a primary interest to consider what materials will be used in the restorations. This is probably one of the primary concerns facing dental patients today. American Bio Dental Center has researched a majority of dental materials available in order to provide our patients with the most bio-compatible material for fillings, crowns and bridges.
Reactivity to dental materials can be loosely compared to food allergies. While many people have no problems with foods such as peanuts, fish, or soybeans, there is a small percentage of the population who will have an allergic reaction to these foods. The reaction to dental materials that we are testing for is similar to an allergy, but it appears to often be much more subtle. Most people do not even notice that anything is happening since they experience no immediate symptoms, but there can still be a reaction taking place. The immune system can react to dental materials as if they were infections or just toxic substances, and it will begin to work overtime to try to remove the “infection” from the body. Often these materials are placed with no investigation into potential problems because the dentists themselves are unaware of the hazards.
While no ethical dentist would ever knowingly place a toxic material in a patient’s mouth, most are simply unaware of the danger. Very few dentists are ever taught that patients can have a reaction to dental work, and those who are educated often believe that only certain types of materials are reactive, and that by avoiding them, they can avoid any such problems. The truth is that anybody can have an immune reaction to any material, and one very good way to minimize the possibility of such problems is to test the body’s reactions in vitro (in a laboratory) via Serum Biocompatibility Testing.
